A few weeks ago, we lost our rodeo virginity out in Apache Junction. Because it was our first experience watching calf-roping, saddle-bronc riding, and steer-wrestling, we were confused when, before the event, an emcee led the crowd in a brief prayer “to make sure the animals wouldn’t get hurt . . . in the name of Jesus. Amen.” Uh, wouldn’t that defeat the purpose of the sport?

Though we don’t believe in hurting animals (or Jesus’ feelings), we sure do love us some cowboyin’. That’s why we’re going to hit up the Helzapoppin’ PRCA Rodeo. The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association-sanctioned shindig brings with it the most badass cowpokes as well as the biggest bucking animals.
